Shortening a note/word

When I move my cursor to the right hand end of the word it changes to double headed arrow. I click and drag to the right and the word/note is lengthened, but when I click and drag to the left the note is not shortened. I’m sure I used to be able to do this. Am I doing something stupid? Thanks

How’s your grid set? Larger than you’d need?

Thanks, bellerandre. I tried changing the grid size and also shrinking the window but it didn’t really help. One or two words (that I didn’t need to shorten) could be shortened but not the words I wanted shortened. It seemed pretty random.

Thanks bellerandre. You were quite right. When I made grid finer I could shorten the notes okay. Brilliant, thanks for your help.
