[Guide] How to Purchase, Download, and Install Synthesizer V Studio and Voice Databases

This topic is intended to help alleviate confusion about the Synthesizer V software components and their initial setup. Click on each heading below to expand or collapse it.

An overview of components

Synthesizer V Studio is the editor, user interface, and vocal synthesis engine used to generate synthesized vocals. The Basic Edition is completely free for commercial and non-commercial use, but is limited to 3 tracks, 2 rendering CPU cores, and does not include all functions. The Pro edition can be purchased on its own or bundled with a paid voice, and includes additional auto-pitch tuning configuration options, user script functionality, cross-lingual synthesis for paid AI voices, alternate phonemes for non-AI voices, multicore rendering, and more.

A Voice Database, sometimes referred to as a “voice library” or “voicebank”, is the software component which the engine uses to recreate vocal samples. Each voice database is created based on the voice of a real human, usually either a voice actor/actress or a professional vocalist who is referred to as the “voice provider”. For this reason, each voice database has a unique sound and may be suited to different styles of music. Voice databases are paid products, however some have a free “lite” version available.

It is important to be aware of the licensing terms of a voice database you are using, which can be found in the installation folder as a “license.txt” file. At the time of writing all paid voices allow commercial usage of the rendered audio output, however this does not necessarily mean you can use other aspects of the product (such as the mascot character, if one exists) for commercial purposes without prior permission. When using a full (non-“lite”) voice, you do not need to declare which voice was used, unless the license states otherwise.

lite versions are available for free, and contain a lower-quality version of a voice database. These are intended for casual hobby usage, or as a trial/sample of the full product. In addition to having limited quality and functionality, it is important to note that lite voices cannot be used for commercial purposes. This means you cannot generate revenue from anything made with a lite voice. You also must declare up-front and clearly state that a lite version was used if you choose to share your creations (such as in the description or title of a YouTube video, ie. “Original Song ft. Eleanor Forte lite”).

"SynthV Standard" vs "SynthV AI" voice databases

There are two methods used to create voice databases for SynthV Studio. Voice databases are usually labelled as “Standard” or “AI” based on which method was used. More recently all voices that do not have both a Standard and AI version have been AI voices, though many have not been labelled as either, which has caused some confusion. When in doubt, check the SynthV Wiki where each voice database’s page clearly states whether it is Standard or AI (Category:Voice databases | SynthV Wiki | Fandom). Generally speaking, if it’s not stated in the product name, voices made prior to 2021 are “Standard” and ones from 2021 onward are usually “AI”.

Standard voices use a traditional concatenation synthesis method. The voice database is recorded by recording a large number of samples, which represent not only each phoneme supported by the language being recorded for, but also the combinations and transitions between each of those sounds, and this is all done at multiple pitches.

Since Standard voice databases include all of these individual samples they usually come to around 300-500MB in size. Based on the user’s input in the editor, the engine pitch-shifts and stitches together these samples (hence “concatenation”) to create a cohesive sound. If you are familiar with Vocaloid or Utau, this is the method used by those engines as well. The Standard method excels at capturing the voice provider’s vocal tone, but does not retain the provider’s personal singing style.

AI voices use a relatively new method for vocal synthesis, introduced to SynthV Studio in December of 2020. Rather than the voice provider recording a large number of distinct phonemes and phoneme transitions, the database is created from complete songs. A machine learning algorithm analyzes the recordings (ie the “learning material”) and, with some human supervision, builds a profile of the voice provider. Based on this profile the AI is able to generate completely new sounds inspired by the learning materials. Notably the original samples are not included in the voice database itself, causing AI voices to only be 10-25MB in size.

SynthV Studio is capable of automatically introducing pitch deviations in an attempt to mimic the voice provider’s personal singing style, and with a wealth of learning materials and machine learning analysis, it is even possible to have an AI voice sing in languages that the voice provider has never recorded. The AI method excels at capturing a voice provider’s personal singing style, and allows for impressive features such as auto-pitch tuning and cross-lingual synthesis. It is important to note that while AI enables cross-lingual capabilities, AI voices still have a “native” language and it is normal for them to have an accent when utilizing cross-lingual synthesis.

A brief note about "Synthesizer V Editor" vs "Synthesizer V Studio"

While we often refer to SynthV Studio as “the editor”, it is important to note that there is a discontinued product from Dreamtonics known as “Synthesizer V” which is often confused with the current generation product. The original product is sometimes referred to as “R1” or “gen1” (“release 1” or “generation 1”).

Synthesizer V R1 is not compatible with any of the currently-available voices. Similarly you cannot use the SynthV Studio editor with any of the R1 voices. All R1 voices have been ported/re-released for SynthV Studio, so don’t worry about missing out on the older options; you can safely download the current-generation product.

If you are ever confused about which version is being discussed, you can easily tell based on the logo and the shade of green used.

For the purposes of this guide, all mentions of “the editor” will specifically refer to the SynthV Studio user interface, not SynthV R1. All instructions below will be specific to SynthV Studio and may not apply to SynthV R1.

Where to purchase paid products

When purchasing paid products, your activation code and download link will be emailed to you, or included in the box if a physical edition is purchased. Take care not to lose your activation code, and always deactivate the product before moving the software to a new computer. Do not delete your order confirmation email, and remember to back up your product codes in case you lose access to your email account (such as uploading an encrypted text file to Dropbox, or storing your codes in a password manager).

SynthV products allow for three activations to account for unexpected hardware failure or other loss, but if you fail to properly deactivate and run out of activations you may be unable to activate the product on your new computer and there is no guarantee that customer support will be able to assist. Hardware upgrades, firmware updates, and changing to a new operating system can cause SynthV Studio to no longer recognize your computer as the same one it was activated on. Always deactivate your products before starting one of those processes.

To summarize:

  1. you can use your activation code three times (not simultaneously)
  2. deactivating the product “refunds” one activation, so you only lose an activation if you fail to deactivate
  3. there is no way to remotely deactivate the product, it must be done from the SynthV Studio UI (verification is done once when you enter the code; the software does not contact the server to check for revocation)

If you misplace your download link, you can get the latest installer by entering your activation code on the Dreamtonics website: Dreamtonics Download

Quadimension (aka Beijing Photek) (https://quadimension.taobao.com/)
This is a bit of a special case since Quadimension only sells their products through Taobao, which can be difficult or impossible for buyers outside China to purchase from. While Chiyu, Haiyi, Shian, and Cangqiong are available from ANiCUTE, many users need to resort to a Taobao proxy service in order to purchase certain Quadimension products.

When using a proxy service it is important to understand that you are paying extra for a third party to purchase an item on your behalf and then forward it to you, even if it is a digital product (which all of Quadimension’s voice libraries are). The links below will be to ParcelUp, a proxy service I have used personally, however it is your responsibility to sufficiently research the additional fees and decide on a proxy service you are comfortable using, and to be aware that it may be difficult or impossible to get customer support from Quadimension as an international buyer.

Linux installation

The steps below assume you know how to execute commands on the Linux terminal. This is a core aspect of using a Linux-based system, however if you are unfamiliar I would recommend reading this page before continuing: command line - What is a terminal and how do I open and use it? - Ask Ubuntu

  1. Download the zip archive for SynthV Studio (svstudio-basic-setup-latest.zip)
Direct download via command line: wget https://resource.dreamtonics.com/download/Synthesizer%20V%20Studio%20Basic/latest/svstudio-basic-linux64-latest.zip -P ~/Downloads
    – If you purchased the Pro edition, refer to the download link in your order confirmation email or enter your activation key on the Dreamtonics website: Dreamtonics Download (be sure to select “Linux” from the dropdown)
    – If you purchased a physical edition you can use the included DVD to install the product. If you do not have a DVD reader, use your activation code to download the files from the Dreamtonics website mentioned above.
    – These steps will assume the zip is in the ~/Downloads directory and commands below will refer to the Basic edition’s zip archive (svstudio-basic-setup-latest.zip). Substitute the file name in the examples for one that matches your version if it differs.

  2. Download the voice installer. Refer to Where to download free components above, or use the download link included in your order confirmation email. All voice database installers are .svpk files, regardless of which operating system you use.
    – These steps will assume the .svpk file is in the ~/Downloads directory and commands below will use Eleanor Forte lite (eleanor-lite-install-100.svpk) as an example. Substitute the file name in the examples for your voice library’s .svpk file.

  3. Navigate to the folder you want to install SynthV Studio to (in this example I use the home directory for simplicity, but you might want to use /opt or /usr):
    cd ~

  4. Unzip the SynthV Studio files:
    unzip ~/Downloads/svstudio-basic-linux64-latest.zip

  5. Navigate to the new SynthV Studio folder:
    cd "Synthesizer V Studio Basic"

  6. Test that you can launch the software:
    ./synthv-studio
    – SynthV Studio should start, but you will not have any voices installed yet. If using the Pro edition, you should be prompted for your activation code.

  7. Close SynthV Studio and install the voice by providing it as an argument when launching the software:
    ./synthv-studio ~/Downloads/eleanor-lite-install-100.svpk
    – SynthV Studio should start, but this time you will be immediately presented with a popup to install your voice database. Follow the on-screen steps.

  8. You should now be able to select a voice from the dropdown in the upper left corner. Keep in mind that the installer you downloaded may not be the most recent version, so you should consider referring to the Updating your products section below.

I have personally tested the above steps on the following Linux distributions, so I can rather confidently say that they should apply to nearly all situations:

  Arch Linux 2022.06.01 with GNOME
  Debian 11.3.0 with GNOME
Fedora Workstation 36 (functional but laggy)
  Kali Linux 2022.2
  Linux Mint 20.3 with Cinnamon
  Manjaro 21.3.1 with Plasma
  MX Linux 21.1
  Nitrux 20220602 with NX Desktop
OpenSUSE Leap 15.4 with Generic Desktop (functional but laggy)
  Solus 4.3 with Budgie
  Ubuntu Desktop 22.04
  Zorin OS 16.1

Updating your products

The “License and Updates” panel is accessible via the cloud icon at the right side of the editor (unless you have dragged the buttons to a different location of the UI).

While there is a setting to automatically check for updates, you can also check manually by clicking the “Check for Updates” button.

After selecting a product indicated by the green “Updates available” text, click the “Update” button to download and install the new version. For updates to SynthV Studio, the software will close and the new version’s installer will be executed. For voice database updates you should simply be presented with an installation popup.

Deactivating or reactivating your products

There may be times that you want to deactivate your products. SynthV products allow for three activations to account for unexpected hardware failure or other loss, but if you fail to properly deactivate and run out of activations you may be unable to activate the product on a new computer. Some users also choose to deactivate any products they are not actively using as a precaution against unexpected hardware failure.

Hardware upgrades, firmware updates, and changing to a new operating system can cause SynthV Studio to no longer recognize your computer as the same one it was activated on. Always deactivate your products before starting one of those processes.

The “License and Updates” panel is accessible via the cloud icon at the right side of the editor (unless you have dragged the buttons to a different location of the UI).

After selecting an activated product, click the “Deactivate” button to deactivate it and reclaim one usage of your activation code. Deactivating SynthV Studio Pro will force the software to close, and upon restarting the program you will be prompted for your activation code. Deactivated voices will not produce audio output if assigned to a track and you will simply hear the default sine tone as if no voice was selected for the track.

You can reactivate SynthV Studio Pro by simply launching the software and entering your activation code, and you can reactivate a voice database by selecting it from the list and clicking “Activate”.

How to get help

Dreamtonics does not reply to topics or issues posted on these forums. The people on these forums are regular users just like you. For issues related to purchases or product activation you must contact customer support for the storefront you purchased from. For example, if you purchase Koharu Rikka from AHS you must contact AHS for support, not Dreamtonics.

You can find customer support contact information for each storefront in the comment below ([Guide] How to Purchase, Download, and Install Synthesizer V Studio and Voice Databases - claire の #7). Briefly and clearly explain the issue in your support request; if the customer support staff does not understand your problem they cannot help you.

Please remember that some of these companies will not be in your time zone. It may take many hours to get a response, and if multiple messages need to be sent back and forth it could take a few days to resolve your issue. If you need to communicate with support staff in another language, it can help to use DeepL (DeepL Translate: The world's most accurate translator) to translate your message and also include the original English text.

If you have general questions about Synthesizer V Studio, how to use certain features, are encountering technical issues, or need some other form of help that other users can help with:

  1. Use the search function in the top right corner to check for existing topics that might already have an answer.
  2. If you can’t find an existing post to solve your issue, create a new topic.
    – When creating a new topic, give it a descriptive title so that forum-users can easily tell at a glance what the topic is about. For example, “Lag problem, please help” is very vague, but “Bad lag when using Instant Mode” immediatey lets other users know what the problem is and whether they might be able to help, as well as making it easier for others to find your topic with the search function. If your topic has a vague or misleading title, forum regulars may change it to be more descriptive.
    – If describing a technical issue, make sure you include your operating system (Windows, MacOS, or Linux), what kind of computer you have (is it a desktop? laptop? Chromebook?), the version number of SynthV Studio and the voice database being used, and whether you are using the software standalone or as a VSTi (and which DAW you are using, if using it as a VSTi).
  3. Please be patient. There aren’t a lot of people who frequent these forums, so it may take some time to get a respose and we won’t always know how to help. Please don’t post the same content in multiple topics or create duplicate posts.

I lost my activation code for Eleanor Forte and Anri, so I can’t activate them. Do you know where I can get it?

For lost activation codes you need to contact the customer support email or submit a contact form for the storefront you purchased from.

Ensure the address you use to send your message matches the one you used to purchase the product in the first place.

Dreamtonics - [email protected]

ANiCUTE - [email protected]
Alternatively, complete the support form at the bottom of your Order Details page upon logging in.

AHS - サポート|製品サポート|AHS(AH-Software)
AHS uses Cleverbridge for order fulfilment, which means you likely don’t need to contact support for products purchased from them. You can enter your email address on the Cleverbridge website to have a summary of your past orders sent to you (which will contain links to your order confirmations and activation codes) - https://www.cleverbridge.com/?scope=cusecolp

Eclipsed Sounds - https://www.eclipsedsounds.com/contact or [email protected]

Audiologie - Contact – AUDIOLOGIE
(they also list [email protected] as their support email in order confirmations, but that seems odd so I’m not sure if that’s correct)

For anyone concerned about the Dreamtonics store not supporting Paypal, they now do due to popular demand.

So I just recently got a chrome book and I’m having trouble getting Linux to install the pro edition. What exact command lines am I supposed to use? (First time using Linux and it’s a little confusing)

I’m not sure I understand the question. All of the steps under the “Linux Installation” section have the appropriate commands listed (steps 3-7).

Which part are you having issues with? Additionally, which Linux distribution are you using?

Edit: I just remembered that there are multiple ways of using Linux on Chromebook, can you also specify which method you used to install Linux? (ie Crostini, Crouton, etc)

Sorry I should have been more specific

So I downloaded Synth v pro in linux through the confirmation email but when I go into the terminal to input the commands it says “can not find or open” I turned on Linux through the developer settings on my computer and I believe I followed all the steps to setting it up properly (but I could be wrong) I think I have a Debian 10 (buster) environment (not sure what that means)

  1. Verify that the zip file is where you expect using the ls command. ls lists the contents of a folder. You can check the contents of your downloads folder with this command:

ls ~/Downloads

The ~ is shorthand for your home directory, and /Downloads refers to the folder name. This will show you a list of files and folders within the Downloads folder in your home directory (which is where most web browsers put downloaded files by default).

  1. Make sure you are using the correct file name. The examples above are for the Basic edition and Eleanor Forte lite, but the file names will be different if you are using the Pro edition and different voices. For example:

unzip ~/Downloads/svstudio-pro-linux64.zip

Edit: Additionally, which tutorial did you follow to get Linux running? Did you install a GUI (Graphical User Interface) at the same time? The Linux environment is running inside ChromeOS, but it’s still a separate operating system that can’t easily use your ChromeOS desktop. It’s kind of like having two computers running on the same laptop.

For this reason, if you don’t have a Linux desktop set up it has nowhere to show you graphical applications like SynthV Studio. This also means that if you download files with the ChromeOS web browser they will be in the ChromeOS downloads folder, not the Linux downloads folder. You would need to download them with the Linux web browser instead (probably Firefox by default). If you need to install a desktop GUI, try a tutorial like this one:

For updating OP: Qing Su, Mo Chen, An Xiao, and Feng Yi are now available via AH-Software. The only Dreamtonics vocal missing now is Weina.

Yuma and Natalie are available via Dreamtonics International and Taobao, as well as AH-Software.

All of them are eligible for starter packs via Dreamtonics International, Dreamtonics Taobao, and AH-Software.

I don’t know if it should be included, but XIA YU YAO is available for digital pre-order as well via VOICEMITH

Honestly, I should have just come here instead of necroing their individual threads LOL
So sorry about that orz

Here’s something REALLY interesting: Crypton Future Media (known for producing Hatsune Miku, the Kagamines, Megurine Luka, MEIKO, and KAITO) is selling the Synthesizer V products on their Sonicwire store. The update is mainly for AH-Software products (including distribution rights, so this involves products like Kevin and Genbu for example). They also added VOICEROID and CeVIO too!

Regarding Synthesizer V, it’s for the following:

  • Synthesizer V Studio editor
  • GENBU
  • Saki
  • Kotonoha Akane and Aoi
  • Koharu Rikka
  • Tsurumaki Maki (Japanese and English)
  • Tsuina-chan
  • Kyomachi Seika
  • Kevin
  • Ryo
  • Natsuki Karin
  • Hanakuma Chifuyu

This does NOT include the Chinese Dreamtonics vocals, which were added to AHS recently. Only the ones listed above for now.

Link is here (please keep in mind that it seems to only be compatible with the Japanese version of the site rather than English?):

When I double click the .svpk file it brings up a list of apps to open the file with. None are Synthesizer V so I go to more apps and select the Synthesizerv.exe and it opens a new instance, but does not load the voice. When I try dragging the .svpk onto the app it give me a red crossed out circle. Dropping it in the SynthV window does nothing. No prompt for a code appears. You talk about a “voice installer” but I see none in the “Where to download free componenets” or in the folder where SynthV is installed. No “voice installer” seems to pop up when I do a search.

What am I missing here?

Using windows 11 latest version, Ryzen 5900x, RTX 3060, using Synthesizer V Build 018

The “voice installer” is just a popup that appears when you follow the instructions, not a separate piece of software.

The executable is synthv-studio.exe, not synthesizerv.exe. You probably installed the wrong software. Go back to the start of the guide and read the A brief note about “Synthesizer V Editor” vs “Synthesizer V Studio” section, then install Synthesizer V Studio.

Thank you it’s working now. What happened was I did a google search for “Synthezier V” and click on the link that popped up which was “Synthesizer V - Official Website”. On this site I clicked on the Sythesizer V logo on the top left and explored the web page. After looking it over the whole site seeing no link to anything else I clicked the big Download button in the top right which I clicked on thinking this is the software. I then skipped to Windows Install on the Guide seeing as how I already thought I downloaded it. If you changed the old site to have some link to “dreamtonics.com” that would be great or change the old software to say “this is old software please go to dreamtonics dot com to download new software” that would cut out the confusion. Putting the following in the guide under the install section would also solve the problem. “If you see a red circle with a slash through it or it does nothing when dragging the .svpk file you probably accidentally downloaded the old version of Synthesizer V. Please follow the download link in the Where to download free components section of this Guide.”

I’m just a user, I have no control over the Dreamtonics website, and I can no longer edit the guide since Discourse locks posts once they reach a certain age.

The guide does specifically go over the difference between the two applications though, which should be sufficient for the vast majority of cases where people follow it from the start.

I did send an email to Dreamtonics a while back requesting that the first-generation site be removed from Google Search results and have a notice added somewhere prominent on the page, but they never responded or acted on that feedback.

Extra big thank you as being only a user. I see your posts everywhere here I thought you worked there. Hopefully anyone else confused can read these posts now and figure it out.

I’m having lots of fun using this software now.

Struggling with the Linux install on my Garuda (Arch derivative) desktop - to install into /opt/ I had to extract it as the root user, then I am able to run the pro version but it doesn’t seem to want to phone home and save the activation. When using the software, I go into licenses and updates, click on the Synthesizer V Studio and the status shows “Paid product - not activated”. When I click activate and paste the activation code that was emailed to me into the view, it shows “activated successfully” but then never seems to update in the settings that it was activated.

Got any ideas on how to fix this or should I reach out to the Dreamtonics team?
